At the November General meeting, the first business item was the election of the 2016 Board Members. Dixie Primosch, who chaired the Nominating Committee, presented a slate of candidates. They were President Becky Lingad, Vice President Chuong Vo, Secretary John Strand, and Treasurer Benjamin Ao. It was moved and seconded to approve the slate as presented. The motion carried.
The following chairs were appointed: Programs Noel Jaimes, Membership Joan Pylman, Ways and Means Naomi Hosoda, Hospitality Lew Gentiluomo, Legislative Mark Dameron, and Communications Brad Beach. Dixie Primosch was also appointed as Member-At-Large.
The new Board and Chairpersons will be sworn in at the December 16 Special Dinner Meeting.
Then Matt Kauble introduced our speaker. He was Robert Lopez, the Current Planning Manager of the Community Development Department of the City of Cerritos. Robert spoke about the status of current development in our City. He reminded us of the past year's opening of Zara, Microsoft, Jared, and Uniqlo in the Los Cerritos Center. Robert pointed out the recent openings of Dick's Sporting Goods and the Cheesecake Factory in the Los Cerritos Mall. Harkins Theatres will be opening a 16 screen megaplex there too. The interior of Los Cerritos Mall is undergoing a makeover.
He talked about the improvements in several parks, including Camp Liberty in Liberty Park and Saddleback Park.
Robert talked about the two apartment developments at the corner of Artesia Blvd and Bloomfield Avenue. Aria, whose developer is the Picerne Group of San Juan Capistrano, was the first luxury apartment project to be approved in Cerritos. Aria's 198 unit luxury apartments has already received over six thousand responses of interest. The Richman Group in San Diego has been approved to develop a 132 unit luxury apartment building at the Sam Ash building, which will be demolished. Both developers have been cooperative in making the designs compatible. To support City services, both property owners will make annual payments to the City in perpetuity. There will be a new traffic signal for the two projects on Artesia Blvd. The traffic signals off the 91 freeway, at the intersection of Artesia and Bloomfield, and the new traffic signal will be computer controlled with sensors on the freeway and at various points on Artesia and Bloomfield.
At the October General meeting, Steve Napolitano and Mike Gin were guest speakers. Both are running for the Los Angeles County Supervisor Fourth District position that will become vacant when Don Knabe's term ends in 2016.
I was not present at the meeting and cannot report what transpired.
At the September General meeting, a Meet the Candidates event was held with several non-members in attendance. All four Republican candidates for ABC USD School Board were invited. Greg Uttecht (Trustee Area 1) and Sophia Tse and Hugo Enciso (both in Trustee Area 5) participated. Maynard Law (Trustee Area 4) was not able to attend because of a previous commitment. All, except for Maynard Law, are members of the Cerritos Republican Club.
After the invocation and pledge of allegiance, the three candidates spoke for about five minutes about their lives and candidacies with Hugo Enciso starting, followed by Sophia Tse, and concluded by Greg Uttecht. President Becky Lingad conducted the meeting and Vice President Noel Jaimes served as the timekeeper. After all three candidates gave their opening remarks, questions were asked by anyone in attendance and each candidate had two minutes to respond. This continued until about 8:30 p.m.
All three candidates and non-members were then asked to leave the meeting room, and Club business was conducted. After it was explained that Club endorsement would require two-thirds approval, it was moved to endorse Greg Uttecht since he was the only Republican in Trustee Area 1. The motion was seconded and approved by over two-thirds of the members present. It was moved, seconded, and approved to not endorse Maynard Law in Trustee Area 4. Since there were two candidates in Trustee Area 5, it was moved, seconded, and approved to vote by secret ballot. Ballots were distributed, collected, and counted by Mark Dameron, Chuong Vo, and Joan Pylman. Hugo Enciso was approved and Sophia Tse was not.
The final order of business was to determine whether or not the Club would provide financial support for the endorsed candidates. It was moved, seconded, and approved to give each candidate financial support.
So, congratulations to Greg Uttecht and Hugo Enciso for winning the endorsement and support of the Cerritos Republican Club in the upcoming November 3 election.
The Cerritos Republican Club held its annual BBQ meeting at Cerritos Park East. Congratulations to Nancy Crockett who coordinated the gathering of food items and supplies and the sprucing up of the shelter with patriotic decorations. Thanks to Bob Crockett, Noel Jaimes, and John Dawson for cooking the delectable hamburgers, hot dogs, and veggie burgers. Thanks to Becky Lingad for the abundant fruits. Nancy Crockett baked her world famous chocolate chip cookies. If I forgot anyone, please let me know and I will include them in a revision of this web page.
Since Candy's camera was in for repair, Janice and John Dawson so kindly provided most of these pictures.
