Van Tran Fundraiser
USA Flag
Dear Friends:

I wanted to personally invite you, at a greatly reduced Cerritos price, to a mid afternoon reception with a special guest, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and our dear friend, Assemblyman Van Tran, the congressional candidate for the 47th District, which includes the cities of Garden Grove, Santa Ana and parts of Fullerton and Anaheim in Orange County. Van Tran's experience includes serving as a Grove Councilmember and as Assemblymember. This experience gives him an excellent chance to unseat Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez.

Senator McCain has been one of the earliest and strongest supporters for Van.  He has agreed to host a fund raising reception for Van's Congressional Campaign during his Southern California tour in April.

I would be honored to have your attendance at this event, which will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Cerritos, at 2:00 p.m., on Tuesday, April 6th.  Coffee, tea and a variety of desserts and fruits will be served at the reception.

If you would like to help Van at a higher level by serving as a Co-Chair or Sponsor, you will have an opportunity to have a private meeting with the Senator and a photo opportunity prior to the the general reception.  National issues such as immigration, health care, international trade, and foreign policy, among others will be discussed..

I'm pleased to offer this opportunity to meet with Senator McCain and help a deserving Republican - Van Tran. Instead of the regular ticket price of $250.00 we are offering this ticket for $75.00. Please email or call Carol Chen for more details on the April 6th reception.  I appreciate your friendship and help, and would be most grateful for your favorable response.

Warm Regards,

Bruce Barrows,

Carol Chen, Event Co-Chair

Club President's Message
Cerritos RC LOGODear Friends,

In the next few weeks there are a number of campaigns that could use help in turning out the vote before their April 13th election date.  Below sre candidates who I have all heard speak publicly about their candidacy and who have received the endorsements and/or support (when bylaws forbid endorsements) of their local Republican organizations.

In the 43rd Assembly District, which primarily consists of Burbank and Glendale, there is a Special Election to fill a seat left open when Paul Krekorian decided to run for L.A. City Council in a prior special election. The only Republican in the field is businessman and philanthropist Sunder Ramani. He is known in the communities as the go to guy when you need money raised for a charity and is a member of numerous clubs and both Chambers of Commerce. He is focusing his campaign on more jobs by lowering taxes and regulatory costs.  This is one of the seats where the registration margin is close enough to make a typically low turnout special election upset a possibility, the key as always will be in turnout.

Whittier Mayor Pro Tem Greg Nordbak is also running for re-election with the same election day. He is the only Republican in the race and is a pro-small business conservative. http://www.gregnordbak.com/

A little bit closer to Cerritos there are a number of races up for grabs in Long Beach.

City Attorney - Tom Reeves, LB City Prosecutor http://tomreeves4cityattorney.com
City Prosecutor - Tim O'Reilly, #2 in LB City Prosecutor's office http://www.oreillyforprosecutor.com
City Council District 1 - Jana Shields http://www.janashields.com
City Council District 3 - Gary De Long, current incumbent http://garydelong.com
City Council District 5 - Mike Hedges http://www.electmikehedges.com/

All are Republicans who I have heard speak.

Tom Reeves is the current City Prosecutor and is running to clean up city hall from the City Attorney position.

Tim O'Reilly is Reeves' top deputy, currently runs the office and is running for the office his current boss is leaving vacant.

For all 3 Republican Lon Beach City Council Candidates, I am officially endorsing, getting the city budget and pension obligations under control are major campaign themes.

Jana Shields is probably the most outwardly conservative of this group of Republicans, but also faces the steepest hill to climb against Democrat incumbent Robert Garcia who use to be the President of an earlier incarnation of the Long Beach Young Republicans. Robert Garcia also has ties within the Log Cabin Republicans and the New Majority.  He used this background and those connections to confuse Republican voters in the district and to beat Bonnie Lowenthal's boyfriend Democrat Evan Braude, Republican Jana Shields, and 3 other candidates in a previous special election to fill this seat Bonnie Lowenthal vacated when she became a member of the State Assembly. These are the only 2 candidates in this race.  This district is near downtown Long Beach just above Ocean Blvd.

Gary De Long is running for re-election to the 3rd District seat.  This district includes the neighborhoods of Naples and Belmont Shore and is one of the two districts bordering Orange County.

Mike Hedges is running against the Orange County Democrat Party's Executive Director, incumbent Gerrie Schipske who is a liberal representing a district previously represented by moderately conservative Republican Doug Drummond. This district is just south of the city of Lakewood and is the other of the two districts bordering Orange County.

Any help you can give to any of these campaigns on or before April 13th can help in us either maintaining what we have or better yet removing seat away from Democrat control, thus building up the Republican bench in the coming years.

We will also be seeking volunteers to help with voter registration.  Joan Pylman has volunteered to head up this operation, if you wish to help out call her at 562-865-6592 or email her at mojopylman@hotmail.com

Yours truly,
Matt Kauble,

Ballot Initiatives
This link will take you to the Secretary of State's website to find initiatives cleared for circulation: http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/ballot-measures/cleared-for-circulation.htm

Over to the side are links to three initiatives currently in circulation.

The Citizen's Power Initiative, is sponsored by the California Tea Party Patriots and the Orange County Lincoln Clubs.  It would prohibt the deduction of money from public employee union members if it will be used for political purposes.  Basically if a member of a public employee union wants to give a donation to their union's PAC they will have to get out their wallet or check book and they, not the union bosses, will determine how much or how little they give.  I have access to already printed out petitions call me at 562-743-1855, if you are unable to make the meeting and want to circulate this game changing petition.

The Local Government Protection Initiative is sponsored principally by the League of California Cities.  Our own board member and Mayor of Cerritos Bruce Barrows is the contact person in our area on this initiative call him at 562-547-1732 or email him at bbarr90703@aol.com to help him collect signatures.  It protects the budgets of local governments from being raided by a voracious state government, which as Ronald Reagan once said is like a baby with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.

George Runner's Vote Safe Now Initiative is in circulation.  This initiative does 3 things that reform the voting process.
1. It gives County Registrars offices more time to count military votes that are mailed in from overseas
2. Requires voters going into the polls to present photo I.D., just like we typically do when we go to the store and pay by check or credit card.
3. Creates an extra long flap that protects the voter's identification by concealing the voter's signature.
I have some extra forms that I will bring with me to our next meeting if you want to have some to circulate.
Next Meeting
The Next Meeting of the Cerritos Republican Club is scheduled for Tuesday, April 13th starting at 7:00 PM in the Skyline Room of the Cerritos Library. We will be having a candidates forum featuring candidates on the June ballot. The moderator will be our own Programs Chair Allen Wood.
