At the December Holiday Dinner meeting, Candy Yee had a field day taking pictures of everyone in attendance. Brad Beach served as the Master of Ceremonies for tonight.
Dinner consisting of turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, carrots, beets, ambrosia, mixed salad, cranberry sauce, relishes, and bread was prepared by Huff's Restaurant. It was delicious!
So ended another great dinner party. Great entertainment, food, and conversation. There were even leftovers for members to take home too. What did you take home?
The Club would like to thank especially the following sponsors of the Dinner: Tony and Carol Chen, Phil and Janice Hawkins, Jay and Naomi Hosoda, James Kang, Becky Lingad, Joan Pylman, George and Bev Ray, Naresh and Priti Solanki, and Greg and Marie Uttecht.
The Club would also like to thank Supervisor Janice Hahn for a donation to the 1st CEB Marines.
At the November General meeting, Brad Beach and Hugo Enciso, who are on the ABC USD Ad Hoc Board Advisory Committee on Facilities, gave a brief talk about the progress of their Committee.
The Committee was divided up into several groups, each of which visited several schools in the District, to cover all the schools in the District. Each group reported on their findings based on the needs for Safety, Technology, Evolution, Parity, and Sustainability. For Safety, they looked at fencing and getting rid of wood chips. For Technology, the Schools want to have wifi campuswide and furniture that would facilitate group activities. Evolution would be the capability to change the environment to accommodate changes in teaching. Parity means that they won't consider swimming pools. For Sustainability, better energy management and plumbing would be important.
In response to a question about low enrollment at some schools, the District will not consider that at all.
The Committee will give a report at the January 16 Board meeting.
Also at this meeting, the slate for the 2018 Board members was approved by the members in attendance. Brad Beach will serve as President, Hugo Enciso is Vice President another term, Tracy Winkler will be the Secretary another year, Becky Lingad will be the Treasurer, Joan Pylman returns as Membership Chair, Lew Gentiluomo returns as Hospitality Chair, and Dixie Primosch will serve another year as Member-at-Large. Please note that there are vacancies for Programs Chair, Communications Chair, Legislative Chair, and Ways and Means Chair. Any member with at least a year's membership can fill one of these vacancies.
At the October General meeting, the guest speaker was Lawrence Peck, who is recognized as the leading expert on pro-North Korea activities in the United States. He started the meeting enumerating the many times that North Korea has broken promises and expects them to continue doing so. North Korea will not honor any kind of agreement regarding their desire to develop their capability to launch intercontinental missiles armed with nuclear warheads.
Mr. Peck keeps his eyes and ears alert to the many Korean organizations in the United States. He is especially watchful on the ones that are pro-North Korea.
Mr. Peck asserted that former Cerritos Mayor Joseph Cho has spoken at a pro-North Korea event.
Barbara Lockwood shared the story of this silk scarf that was given to her mother during the Korean War. Initially in the Korean War, General Douglas MacArthur was appointed the Commander-in-Chief of the United Nations Command. Barbara Lockwood's father was the Chief Flight Engineer on the airplane that flew General MacArthur around during the war. When General MacArthur was relieved of his duty in April 1951, all the wives of the flight crew were given a silk scarf by a Japanese company in appreciation of the services of MacArthur and his crew. This scarf was passed on to Barbara.
At the September General meeting, the Cerritos Republican Club sponsored a forum for the candidates for the ABC USD School Board election which will take place on November 7. All candidates from the ABC USD Trustee Areas 2, 3, and 6 were invited to participate. Soo Yoo, who is running unopposed in Trustee Area 2, was present. In Trustee Area 3 Daniel Fierro, Ernie Nishii, and Lynda Johnson were present. Armin Reyes in Trustee Area 3 declined our invitation. Both Olga Rios and Louise Dobson in Trustee Area 6 did not attend our forum.
Brad Beach served as moderator for the forum, and Joan Pylman was the timekeeper. Questions were solicited from the audience. Each of the four candidates in attendance introduced themselves and then three questions, which had been provided previously by the CRC Board, were answered by the candidates with a rotation of who replied first. Then questions from the audience were read to the candidates for answering by all candidates. Finally, each candidate made closing remarks. This author does not want to misquote the answers given by each candidate, so replies are not provided here.
The Club wishes to thank the four candidates for taking the time to participate in this forum and wish them all well.
